Rodrigo Maruy is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Critical Computational Studies at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. Prior to that, he was a fellow at the Centre for Social Critique at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In the framework of the DFG Research Training Group 2638: Normativity – Critique – Change, Rodrigo worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Practical Philosophy and Social Philosophy at Humboldt-Universität, where he wrote a PhD thesis on the relation between law and emancipation in Frankfurt School critical social theory. He has studied Philosophy in Lima, Bordeaux and Berlin.

Rodrigo's current research project has the working title Dialektik der Dekolonisation: Souveränität, Dependenz und Extraktivismus. The main thrust of the project is to articulate a dialectical theory of decolonization as a contradictory process.

If decolonization is understood as a historical process through which colonies achieved political independence, then it seems contradictory that this actualization of sovereignty in the form of the nation state led to the development of neocolonial relations of dependency. In the course of decolonization, formal independence thus turned into material dependency—a turnover that can be observed in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean as well as of Africa and Asia. However, dependency itself is a dialectical concept, for it constitutes not only a relation of subordination, but also at the same time one of interdependence. Therefore, while the Global South is dependent on the Global North—in the sense of being structurally subordinated to it—, the Global North at the same time depends on the labor and resources of the Global South. Such interdependence comes to the fore paradigmatically when considering the material infrastructures of technological development and dependency in their relation to extractivism.

Against this background, the research project seeks to contribute to ongoing debates and struggles for decolonization by conceptualizing it as an inherently dialectical process. To this end, the project brings together the conceptual and philosophical resources of Frankfurt School critical social theory, critical theories of sovereignty in constitutional and international law, Latin American dependency theories as well as critical approaches to extractivism and technology.
